    Simulation of hypoxia PET-tracer uptake in tumours:Dependence of clinical uptake-values on transport parameters and arterial input function

    Poor radiotherapy outcome is in many cases related to hypoxia, due to the increased radioresistance of hypoxic tumour cells. Positron emission tomography may be used to non-invasively assess the oxygenation status of the tumour using hypoxia-specific radiotracers. Quantification and interpretation of these images remains challenging, since radiotracer binding and oxygen tension are not uniquely related. Computer simulation is a useful tool to improve the understanding of tracer dynamics and its relation to clinical uptake parameters currently used to quantify hypoxia. In this study, a model for simulating oxygen and radiotracer distribution in tumours was implemented to analyse the impact of physiological transport parameters and of the arterial input function (AIF) on: oxygenation histograms, time-activity curves, tracer binding and clinical uptake-values (tissue-to-blood ratio, TBR, and a composed hypoxia-perfusion metric, FHP). Results were obtained for parallel and orthogonal vessel architectures and for vascular fractions (VFs) of 1% and 3%. The most sensitive parameters were the AIF and the maximum binding rate (K-max). TBR allowed discriminating VF for different AIF, and FHP for different K-max, but neither TBR nor FHP were unbiased in all cases. Biases may especially occur in the comparison of TBR- or FHP-values between different tumours, where the relation between measured and actual AIF may vary.     Hydroclimate of the Andes Part I: Main Climatic Features

    The Andes is the longest cordillera in the world and extends from northern South America to the southern extreme of the continent (from 11°N to 53°S). The Andes runs through seven countries and is characterized by a wide variety of ecosystems strongly related to the contrasting climate over its eastern and western sides, as well as along its latitudinal extension. This region faces very high potential impacts of climate change, which could affect food and water security for about 90 million people. In addition, climate change represents an important threat on biodiversity, particularly in the tropical Andes, which is the most biodiverse region on Earth. From a scientific and societal view, the Andes exhibits specific challenges because of its unique landscape and the fragile equilibrium between the growing population and its environment. In this manuscript, we provide an updated review of the most relevant scientific literature regarding the hydroclimate of the Andes with an integrated view of the entire Andes range. This review paper is presented in two parts. Part I is dedicated to summarize the scientific knowledge about the main climatic features of the Andes, with emphasis on mean large-scale atmospheric circulation, the Andes-Amazon hydroclimate interconnections and the most distinctive diurnal and annual cycles of precipitation.     Hydroclimate of the Andes Part II: Hydroclimate Variability and Sub-Continental Patterns

    This paper provides an updated review of the most relevant scientific literature related to the hydroclimate of the Andes. The Andes, the longest cordillera in the world, faces major challenges regarding climate variability and climate change, which impose several threats to sustainable development, including water supply and the sustainability of ecosystem services. This review focuses on hydroclimate variability of the Andes at a sub-continental scale. The annual water cycle and long-term water balance along the Andes are addressed first, followed by the examination of the effects of orography on convective and frontal precipitation through the study of precipitation gradients in the tropical, subtropical and extratropical Andes. In addition, a review is presented of the current scientific literature on the climate variability in the Andes at different timescales.     Observed and Projected Hydroclimate Changes in the Andes

    The Andes is the most biodiverse region across the globe. In addition, some of the largest urban areas in South America are located within this region. Therefore, ecosystems and human population are affected by hydroclimate changes reported at global, regional and local scales. This paper summarizes progress of knowledge about long-term trends observed during the last two millennia over the entire Andes, with more detail for the period since the second half of the 20th century, and presents a synthesis of climate change projections by the end of the 21st century. In particular, this paper focuses on temperature, precipitation and surface runoff in the Andes. Changes in the Andean cryosphere are not included here since this particular topic is discussed in other paper in this Frontiers special issue, and elsewhere (e.g. IPCC,2019b). While previous works have reviewed the hydroclimate of South America and particular sectors (i.e., Amazon and La Plata basins, the Altiplano, Northern South America, etc.) this review includes for the first time the entire Andes region, considering all latitudinal ranges: tropical (North of 27°S), subtropical (27°S−37°S) and extratropical (South of 37°S). This paper provides a comprehensive view of past and recent changes, as well as available climate change projections, over the entire Andean range. From this review, the main knowledge gaps are highlighted and urgent research necessities in order to provide more mechanistic understanding of hydroclimate changes in the Andes and more confident projections of its possible changes in association with global climate change.Fil: Pabón Caicedo, José Daniel.     Knowledge Graphs Evolution and Preservation -- A Technical Report from ISWS 2019

    One of the grand challenges discussed during the Dagstuhl Seminar "Knowledge Graphs: New Directions for Knowledge Representation on the Semantic Web" and described in its report is that of a: "Public FAIR Knowledge Graph of Everything: We increasingly see the creation of knowledge graphs that capture information about the entirety of a class of entities. [...] This grand challenge extends this further by asking if we can create a knowledge graph of "everything" ranging from common sense concepts to location based entities. This knowledge graph should be "open to the public" in a FAIR manner democratizing this mass amount of knowledge." Although linked open data (LOD) is one knowledge graph, it is the closest realisation (and probably the only one) to a public FAIR Knowledge Graph (KG) of everything. Surely, LOD provides a unique testbed for experimenting and evaluating research hypotheses on open and FAIR KG. One of the most neglected FAIR issues about KGs is their ongoing evolution and long term preservation. We want to investigate this problem, that is to understand what preserving and supporting the evolution of KGs means and how these problems can be addressed. Clearly, the problem can be approached from different perspectives and may require the development of different approaches, including new theories, ontologies, metrics, strategies, procedures, etc. This document reports a collaborative effort performed by 9 teams of students, each guided by a senior researcher as their mentor, attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2019). Each team provides a different perspective to the problem of knowledge graph evolution substantiated by a set of research questions as the main subject of their investigation.     Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Generación de un vocabulario de contaminación acústica para la publicación de datos en portales de datos abiertos de ciudades

    Las administraciones locales de las ciudades generan un gran volumen de datos como resultado de los procesos que siguen para atender los asuntos administrativos de gobierno y las necesidades de los ciudadanos. Sin embargo, estos datos en ciertos casos no son aprovechados completamente y se quedan dentro de las instituciones sin que sea posible su reutilización. En la actualidad, las iniciativas de apertura de datos han ido ganando terreno a nivel mundial y cada vez más ciudades se involucran en este ámbito debido a las ventajas que provee adoptar una estrategia de datos abiertos tanto a nivel organizacional como a nivel de los usuarios que se benefician de estos datos. Es por esto que surge la necesidad de generar directrices que permitan a las ciudades publicar datos de calidad en sus portales, que sean precisos y homogéneos con respecto de las de otras ciudades para prevenir errores en el momento de su integración y facilitar su reutilización. En este trabajo fin de máster se describe el proceso seguido para la generación de un vocabulario que permita representar los datos de contaminación acústica que son recopilados por las estaciones de medición de las ciudades con la finalidad de proveer un modelo común a seguir para la publicación de estos datos. El vocabulario desarrollado reutiliza varias ontologías que son ampliamente conocidas e incluye clases, propiedades e instancias que han sido creadas específicamente para cubrir el dominio. En este trabajo también se incluyen ejemplos de cómo instanciar el vocabulario y se ha generado la documentación que contiene la descripción detallada del vocabulario para que las ciudades cuenten con una guía en el momento de publicar los datos.---ABSTRACT---Local administrations generate large amounts of data due to the processes followed to attend administrative governance issues and the needs of its citizenry. However, in some cases this data is not fully exploited and fall within institutions making their reuse impossible. Currently, data opening initiatives had gained ground worldwide and more cities are involved in this area due to the advantages of adopting an open data strategy, which are visible at the organizational level and at user level who benefit from this data. In this line, there is a need to generate guidelines that allow cities to publish quality data on their portals. This data, should be accurate and homogeneous among other cities to prevent integration errors and to facilitate their reuse. This work shows the generation process of a vocabulary to represent the acoustic pollution data collected by measurement stations located in cities, providing a common model for the publication of this data. The developed vocabulary reuses several well-known ontologies and includes classes, properties and instances specifically created to cover the domain. This work also includes examples about how to instantiate the vocabulary and provides a detailed documentation being a guide for local administrations at the time of publishing the data
